The Integrated Feed Hygiene System (IFHS)
BOCM PAULS is a major link in the food supply chain and as such we take food safety responsibilities very seriously indeed. The company have invested in excess of half a million pounds on the Shepshed and Preston mills to provide the company with unmatched bio security systems that produce mashes for poultry breeding stock. The IFHS regime stretches from raw material sourcing to delivery of finished feed and advice on bacteriological control on farm. Whatever times and temperatures customers prefer they can be sure that BOCM PAULS can provide conditions for eradicating salmonella and other pathogenic bacteria.
The company have developed the following IFHS Pledge which provides our customers with the confidence and reassurance they require:
IFHS PLEDGE
Through control of raw material purchasing, manufacture and delivery of finished feeds to:
- Provide our customers with poultry breeder feeds of the highest standards in the industry.
- Ensure that the nutritional value of the feeds meet the requirements of the stock being fed.
- Use the available technology to achieve an exceptional standard of feed hygiene that matches the aspirations of our customers, their customers and the final consumer of poultry products.
The IFHS - State of the Art Technology from BOCM PAULS
Shepshed Mill
BOCM PAULS have installed the most advanced feed hygiene system in the United Kingdom at the Shepshed Mill, located near Loughborough in Leicester. The Integrated Feed Hygiene System (IFHS) is specially designed for the production of high quality mashes for use in the poultry breeder sector.
The ProcessThe system consists of a new dedicated heat treatment line for poultry mash. Dedication starts prior to heat treatment and includes all routing through the heat treatment process to dedicated bulk outloading bins and from there to the bulk delivery vehicles.
Heat treatment is achieved using super heated steam at 140°C into a steam jacketed conditioner and into the sterilisation vessel. This is sealed with sophisticated filterings/discharge arrangements to ensure product moves in a first in/first out process. Temperature and residence time in the sterilisation vessel are both variable. The vessel is kept clean and sterile through a heated dry air circulation system before and after each production run.
The IFHS includes a special mash cooler to return temperature and moisture to the pre treatment levels. All plant at the heat treatment and cooling stage is manufactured with stainless steel maximising hygiene conditions. The dedicated routing through to the delivery vehicle ensures that recontamination is prevented.
Sterilisation by Increased Retention and Temperature (SIRT)
The SIRT system is an integral element of the new BOCM PAULS Integrated Feed Hygiene System. The sterilisation system was developed by the American Company CPM after an extensive three year research programme. This system is designed to reduce even further the risk of bacterial contamination entering the food chain via the feed.
Preston Mill
The IFHS system at BOCM PAULS Preston mill is a unique system. The process was devised in-house by Ed Robinson, the Site Manager and has been patented by BOCM PAULS. The challenge was to design an IFHS plant which would be capable of producing heat treated finished feeds in a variety of textures through a common processing line. The IFHS plant at Preston can produce both pellets and meals, heat treated to the bio security standards specified by our customers and the retailers. Its unique system of grinding post cooling allows the use of a conventional box cooler, thereby minimising the risk of cross contamination associated with meals coolers. A totally enclosed 'airless' grinding system ensures that bio security is maintained by only drawing filtered air, via the cooler, into the heat treatment system.
BOCM PAULS Preston mill in general and the IFHS plant in particular has leading High Street retailer accreditation.
Advantages of using the IFHS for Mashes
- First in - First Out ensures that all the feed in the manufacturing run receives the required heat treatment requested by our customers.
- Flexibility in Treatment Time and Temperature, enabling customers to specify their requirements for effective salmonella treatment.
- Clean Feed for Safe Food, the system provides the optimum conditions for eradicating salmonella and other bacteria without any major damage to lysine, vitamins and other important nutrients.
- Optimum Biological Performance
- No salmonella present after four minutes treatment
- Total enterobacterial kill from initial levels of 106
- Total mould kill from initial levels of 106
- No change in metabolisable energy level of feed
- No change in growth rates of the birds fed
- Enables Breeders to continue mash feeding;
- Mash feed increases the time it takes the bird to consume daily allowance
- Increase in activity associated with feeding a mash versus crumb/pellet
- Improved control of body weights
- Reduced variation in body weight
- Enhanced egg production/hatchability
- Improved control over egg weight
- Safe clean feed provides assurance to hatchery, processor, retailer and consumer.
The need to have hygienic animal feed is the first step to healthy food products. Sterilisation is one of the most important processes to ensure top quality animal feed, free from bacterial infection.
The BOCM PAULS Integrated Feed Hygiene System provides the right conditions for killing pathogenic bacteria.
